Heart Healthy Winner’s List  

Research partnerships between the USDA US Meat Animal Research Center and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have identified significant associations between BCHF risk and specific genetic markers: 

  • Risk Factors: Markers on the genome areas ARRDC3 and NF1A. 
  • Protective Factor: A marker known as Jumonji. 
  • Testing: Commercial testing for these markers is available through Bullseye GX. 

Inclusion Criteria & Tiers 

To be included in this directory, a bull must be free of any risk associated with both ARRDC3 and NF1A. Qualifying bulls are further divided into three tiers based on the protective Jumonji factor: 

  • Tier 1: Homozygous for the protective Jumonji factor (Best protection). 
  • Tier 2: Heterozygous for the protective Jumonji factor. 
  • Tier 3: No Jumonji-associated protection (but free of risk factors). 

How to Use This List 

This list is a resource for producers searching for bulls that reduce the risk of BCHF in their herds.

How to Add a Bull 

We accept both AI sires and natural service bulls. If you have a bull that meets the criteria above and has been tested through Bullseye GX, we would be happy to add him to the list. Please contact Dr. Brian Vander Ley at bvanderley2@unl.edu if you would like to add a bull to this list. 

Updates 

We review the availability of bulls on this list at least once per year. However, we cannot guarantee that listed bulls are currently available for use.
