Purpose: we want you to be protected, professional, and ready for action. The standards below provide you with good protection from some of the common hazards you may encounter during your time at GPVEC while still allowing you to present a professional appearance to our clientele and to be comfortable working in a wide range of conditions. Examples of good and not so good are provided below.

Standard working attire

  1. Long pants without holes or tears
    • Good: jeans
    • Not Good: athleisure wear, distressed jeans
  2. Scrub tops, polo shirts, button down shirts
    • Good: scrubs
    • Not Good: tank tops, t-shirts, sleeveless shirts
  3. Closed toed shoes
    • Good: work shoes, lace-up athletic shoes
    • Not Good: slip on shoes including Hey Dudes, Sperrys, and crocs.

Clinical Attire

  1. Coveralls/bibs to be worn when seeing cases (including necropsy cases)
    • Good: Long or short sleeve coveralls or bib overalls with scrubs (if you like bibs, have a shirt change readily available). Some students and veterinarians like water resistant options like Uddertech. Bring 2 pairs, at least.
    • Not good: insulated outer wear. Pro-tip: Wear layers underneath your coveralls to remain comfortable in a range of temperature conditions.
  2. Washable footwear
    • Good: washable PVC boots, muck boots, slip-on boots (e.g. Tingley’s)
    • Not Good: Anything with non-washable components (fabric, leather, etc).
  3. Hair and jewelry
    • Hair longer than chin-level should be tied back to minimize entanglement risk
    • Wearing jewelry is discouraged. Damage, loss, and injury to the wearer and patient are very possible.
